Sharks Set Records, Qualify for Nationals at the Great Lake Zones Meet 3/19-3/21-10
The LCFY Sharks competed against more than 100 other swim teams at the Great Lakes Zone Championship meet held March 19-21 at Bowling Green, Ohio. Although the Sharks had one of the smaller squads, with 26 swimmers competing, they finished fourteenth in overall team standings, set seven new team records, and qualified swimmers for the YMCA Short Course and Long Course Championship meets held later this year.
The 13/14 girls led the Sharks, finishing fourth in their age group. Kassandra Mestemaker, swimming in her last meet of the season, won both the 100 and 200 yard Breaststroke and set new team records in both events. Teammate Allison Schroeder set a new team record in the 400 yard Individual Medley, qualified for the YMCA Long Course National Championship, and finished tenth in the 13/14 girls high point standing, while Keely Lovern finished twenty-third.
The 11/12 girls, a small squad consisting of Paige Griesse, Carolyn Mestemaker, Maggie McGonagle, and Shelby Seas turned in one of the most exciting relay performances of the meet. The group competed in the 200 yard Medley Relay and had accumulated a two body length lead by the time Mestemaker entered the water for the anchoring 50 yard free. What Mestemaker didn’t know was that the team chasing them was anchored by a much taller, older, and more experienced swimmer. The noise in the natatorium rose to deafening levels as Mestemaker raced to the finish, run down at the final touch by the other team. The performance was still good enough the place the relay in eighth, and helped the 11/12 girls finish seventh in their age group. Griesse and McGonagle finished eighth and twenty-third respectively in the 11/12 girls high point standings.
Nor were the 11/12 boys be outdone. Although the Sharks only had two swimmers competing in the age group, backstroke specialists Nathaniel Graham and Timmy Spichiger still managed to finish seventeenth in age group standings. Graham set a new team record in the 50 yard Backstroke while Spichiger set a new record in the 100 yard Backstroke.
Although the Sharks had only one swimmer in any 10 and under age group, Jack McGonagle showed that the younger Sharks swimmers were not to be ignored, turning in best times of the season in the 50 and 200 yard freestyle, placing 31st in each event. His times as a 10 year old were good enough to qualify him for the SEOWV AA Championship meet in the 11/12 boys age group for next year.
The 15 and over girls also turned in solid performances, led by butterflyer Abby Brown and sprinter Kayte Postle. Brown won the 50 yard Butterfly and qualified for the YMCA Long Course National Championship in the 200 yard Butterfly, while Postle qualified for the same meet in the 100 yard Freestyle. Brown also set new team records in the 50 and 200 yard Butterfly at the meet.
The Sharks’ final meet of the short course season is the YMCA National Championships, held April 6-10 at the Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Sharks Set Records, Finish Fourth at SEOWV League Championship 3/6-3/7/10
The Licking County Family YMCA Sharks Swim Team has had a string of successful meets by anyone’s standards. It seems that the SEOWV Championship meet, held March 6-7 2010 at Ohio University was no exception.
Finishing fourth overall, the Sharks also won the 13/14 girls division and finished 3rd in the 9/10 boys division. Sydney King won the 13/14 girls high point award for scoring more points than any other 13/14 girl at the meet.
The Sharks also qualified additional individuals and relays for the YMCA National Short Course Championship meet. The girls 13 and over 400 yard Medley relay of Sydney King, Alex Untied, Abigail Brown, and Kaytee Postle swam a time of 4:04.90 to qualify for YMCA Nationals. Kassandra Mestemaker also qualified for the meet in the 200 yard Breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:27.07 and the 100 yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07. 66. The 100 yard Butterfly brought another National qualifier for the team as Abigail Brown swam a time of 59.44, well under the cut off time.
Additional Sharks also qualified for the YMCA Zone meet, including Charlie Peppers (50 yard Breaststroke), Shelby Seas (100 yard Breaststroke), Nathaniel Graham (100 yard Backstroke), Timmy Spichiger (100 yard Backstroke), Abigail Brown (200 yard Butterfly), Seth Stahl (200 yard Backstroke), Hannah Rush (50 yard Butterfly), and Kassandra Mestemaker (50 yard Butterfly).
Sharks relays qualifying for Zones included the 13/14 200 yard Medley Relay of Makenna Dunlap, Kassandra Mestemaker, Keely Lovern, and Allison Schroeder; the 15 and over 200 yard Medley Relay of Charlie Peppers, Tom Barrett, Joel Roth, and Cody Byrd; and the 13 and over 400 yard Freestyle Relay of Kevin Bell, Tommy Spichiger, Seth Stahl, and Jamie Datz.
New team record holders after the meet were Nathaniel Graham (11/12 boys 50 yard Backstroke), Timmy Spichiger (11/12 boys 100 yard Backstroke), Sydney King (13/14 girls 200 yard IM and 100 yard Backstroke), Kassandra Mythmaker (50, 100, and 200 yard Breaststroke), Grant Stahl (400 yard IM), and Abigail Brown (50, 100, and 200 yard Butterfly). The 13/14 girls 200 Free Relay of Alex Untied, Allison Schroeder, Keely Lovern, and Sydney King also set a new team record, as did the 15 and over 400 yard Medley Relay of Sydney King, Alex Untied, Abigail Brown, and Kaytee Postle.
Small Sharks Squad Swims Big at Big Little Invitational 2/28/10
Although stomach flu and other meet commitments meant fewer than usual swimmers competing for the Licking County Family YMCA Sharks swim team, the small Sharks squad still turned in big races and large time drops at the 42nd annual Big Little Invitational held February 28, 2010 at Kenyon College.
Twenty nine swimmers ranging in age from 6 to 18 represented the team, each competing in individual and relay events. Jack and Tom Barrett, last minute entries in the 11 and over 50 yard Breaststroke, set the tone for the meet as both achieved YMCA Zone qualifying times of 30.06 and 30.97 respectively. Teammate Charlie Peppers also qualified for Zones with a time of 31.05 in the same event.
The excitement continued in the 50 yard Backstroke as Nathaniel Graham continued his quest to break an 11/12 boys team record set in 1986. Although he missed the time, his swim placed him within a second of breaking it.
The 100 yard Butterfly brought more best times for the team, as Rachel Baughn and Jarod Rose both achieved personal bests. The team’s momentum carried over into the 100 yard Freestyle as Kayla Hill, Nathaniel Graham, Zed Huff and Wyatt Woertkoetter each dropped time.
Nor were the junior members of the team slow off the blocks. The Sharks relay team of Madi Cartnal, Riley Bunstine, Kaitlyn Chapman, and Lily Plaugher set the standard early as they dropped four seconds in their 100 yard Medley Relay.
The 200 yard Freestyle saw great swims from the 9/10 girls. Abby Jarvis shaved five seconds off of her time, and teammate Sarah Martin dropped three seconds in the same event. The 50 yard Freestyle saw tremendous time drops from many swimmers. Madi Cartnal, swimming in the 8 and under age group, dropped seven seconds in her 50 yard Freestyle, while teammates Lauren Westerheide, Rachel Howe, Rowan Moore, Kelsey Seas, Katy Darby, Kasey Miller, and Abby Jarvis also dropped time.
Time drops were not the only accomplishment for the younger Sharks. Many achieved qualifying times for the YMCA Championship meet at the Big Little Invitational. Swimmers achieving new qualifying times included: Madi Cartnal (25 yard Butterfly), Rowan Moore (100 yard Freestyle), Kelsey Seas (50 yard Backstroke and 50 yard Breaststroke), and Shelby Graham (50 yard Breaststroke).
Barnett Wins at Barbara Kay Mini Meet 2/27-2/28/2010
The Licking County Family YMCA Swim Team sent a small squad of swimmers to the Barbara Kay Mini Meet held at the Worthington Swim Club the end of February. The Sharks, with a total squad of fewer than 10 swimmers, finished 17th in combined team scoring at the meet.
Caillie Barnett had outstanding swims at the meet, posting best times in her events and winning the 50 Butterfly. Her younger sister Livia also swam best times.
On the boys’ side, Bryson Hauenstein posted time drops in each event he swam, and finished in the ribbons for many of them. Ian Jarvis also posted best times in his events.
The Barbara Kay Mini Meet held annually the last weekend of February and is open to swimmers eight years of age and younger. Most of the 2010 LCFY Sharks Barbara Kay squad will still be eligible too compete again next year—and they will be faster than ever.
Danger: Sharks in the Water! at the USA Regional Meet 2/19-2/21/10
The Licking County Family YMCA (LCFY) Sharks swim team sent a contingent of 23 swimmers to compete at USA Swimming’s Regional Championship Meet held in Columbus, Ohio on February 19-21, 2010. Although a small group compared to other teams, the Sharks swam a total of 73 best times over the weekend and qualified swimmers for championship meets in new events.
Leading the charge were Keely Lovern, Alex Untied, and Jack McGonagle. Lovern, swimming in the 13-14 girls age group, qualified for the Ohio Junior Olympic Meet in the 200 yard Backstroke. Her time also qualified her for the Long Course YMCA Championship Meet, held later this summer. Untied, also competing in the 13-14 girls age group, qualified for Ohio’s Junior Olympic Meet in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle. McGonagle, swimming in the 10 and under boys age group, also qualified for the Ohio Junior Olympic Meet in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle and set new team records in his events.
Other swimmers qualifying for the Junior Olympic Meet were Shelby Seas (50 yard Breaststroke) and Sydney King (400 yard Individual Medley).
The Sharks also are sending additional swimmers to the YMCA Great Lakes Zone Championship meet in March. Qualifiers for the meet include all of the Junior Olympic qualifiers plus Paige Griesse and Timmy Spichiger.
In addition, the Sharks also had swimmers achieve YMCA All Star times. These include the Junior Olympic and Zone qualifiers as well as Kayla Fenimore, Danni Roberts, Alan Chapman, and Wyatt Woertkoetter.
While the team’s performances were amazing, they don’t tell the whole story. Many of the Sharks are still training hard and did not rest for this meet. Further, many of the younger swimmers have little experience with a three day meet, let alone one with preliminary and final competitions. Yet the Sharks showed their physical and mental toughness, coming back to compete with everything they had in every race, and never giving up. This championship attitude was best shown by four newer swimmers: Alex Fenimore, Abby Jarvis, Ian Jarvis, and Alexis Hercenberg.
Fenimore and Ian Jarvis were competing in the 10 and under boys age group, and both are just 8 years old. While considerable shorter and younger than most of their competitors, Alex and Ian raced to every wall, including posting best times in the 200 yard Individual Medleys. Both also qualified to swim at finals, beating older swimmers to secure spots.
Abby Jarvis also competed in the 200 yard Individual Medley in the 10 and under girls age group. She had never swum the event before and was understandably nervous before her race, but still posted a fast time and was all smiles with her coaches afterwards.
Hercenberg swam the 100 yard Butterfly in the 11-12 girls age group. Racing in an outside lane against fast butterflyers, Hercenberg raced them for the first 50 yards, then tired and dropped back. At that point it would have been easy for her to give up on the rest of the race, but Hercenberg fought back, focusing on good stroke and turn technique and finishing in the second alternate position going into finals. Knowing that she might have another opportunity to swim if she were ready at the start of the 100 yard Butterfly finals, Hercenberg returned to warm up and was ready and waiting to replace any swimmer who failed to return for the 11-12 girls 100 yard Butterfly. Unfortunately for Hercenberg, she was not needed for finals, but she handled the disappointment with grace, cheering for her teammates the whole evening.
With two weeks remaining before the SEOWV YMCA Championship Meet, the Sharks are sharpening their technique and resting up. The only questions remaining are how many more best times will they post and how many more records will come tumbling down.
YMCA Regional Championship 2/13/2010
Three LCFY Sharks swimmers qualified for the SEOWV Championship meet while swimming and the SEOWV Regional Championships on February 13, 2010. The team finished fourth in overall standings, with both individual and relay wins.
Emily Kauchak led the way for the Sharks, winning both the 200 yard Freestyle and the 50 yard Backstroke in SEOWV Championship qualifying times. Kauchak was also part of the winning 11/12 girls 200 yard Freestyle relay along with Kayla Hill, Cheyenna Hansen, and Sami Evans. Hill also scored individual points for the Sharks with third place finishes in both the 100 yard Individual Medley and the 100 yard Freestyle.
The 9/10 girls 200 yard Freestyle relay of Kasey Miller, Katie Darby, Sophia Shai, and Abby Jarvis also won. In addition, Jarvis took first and third in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events, while Miller and Shai finished second and third in the 9/10 girls 50 yard Butterfly. Darby also placed in individual events, finishing second in the 100 yard Individual Medley and sixth in the 50 yard Freestyle.
On the boys’ side, Jack Owen finished second in the 50 yard Breastroke and Thomas Worrell scored for the Sharks with a fourth place finish in the 50 yard Backstroke and a sixth in the 50 yard Freestyle. Worrell’s younger brother Robert achieved a Championship qualifying time and a win in the 8 and under boys 50 yard Freestyle, while teammate Austin Hercenberg finished sixth in the same event.
Other winners for the Sharks included KelseySeas in the 9/10 girls 50 yard Breaststroke, and Riley Bunstine in the 8 and under girls 25 yard Breaststroke. Madi Cartnal, also competing in the 8 and under girls races, finished second and third in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyles with SEOWV Championship qualifying times in both.
The Swims (and Storm) of the Season at TYR 2/5-2/7/10
While the weather outside may have been frightful during the weekend of February 5-7, 2010, the Licking County Family YMCA Sharks did not let it stop them from swimming fast times at the TYR Sport Winter Invitational held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Grant Stahl, swimming in the 13-14 boys age group, set new team records in the 200 yard Butterfly and the 400 yard Individual Medley. Sydney King, not to be outdone, set new team records in the 50 yard Backstroke and the 100 yard Freestyle. The Freestyle record was especially impressive, beating a standard that had been in existence for a quarter of a century.
King and Stahl were not the only Sharks with memorable swims over the weekend. Many of the Sharks qualified for USA Swimming’s Junior Olympic and Sectional Championships as well. They were led by Allison Schroeder, who qualified for the Junior Olympic meet in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 yard Freestyle events. Other Junior Olympic qualifiers were Sydney King (100 yard Freestyle and 200 yard Individual Medley), Keely Lovern (50 yard Freestyle), Kassandra Mestemaker (200 yard Breaststroke) and India Sherman (50 yard Freestyle). King and Mestemaker also qualified for USA Swimming’s Sectional Championships—King in the 100 yard Freestyle, and Mestemaker in the 200 yard Breaststroke.
The remaining meets for the Sharks include the SEOWV YMCA Championship March 6-7 at Athens, Ohio; the USA Swimming Junior Olympic Championship March 12-14 at Bowling Green, Ohio; the YMCA Zone Championship March 19-21 at Bowling Green, Ohio; and the YMCA National Championship, April 7-10 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Fast Times Against Hilliard 1/30/10
The LCFY Sharks swim team hosted the Hilliard YMCA Swim Team on Saturday, January 30. As is usual for a home meet, the Sharks had a large contingent of swimmers competing. What was unusual was the number of new team records the Sharks set.
The coaches knew something was up when not one but two new records were set in the 8 and under 200 meter Freestyle. Caillie Barnett set the new time standard for 8 and under girls, while teammate Alex Fenimore set the new time for the 8 and under boys. Another new 8 and under record was set by Ian Jarvis in the 50 meter Breaststroke later in the meet.
Not to be outdone, the 9-10 age group also set its fair share of records, this time in the 100 meter events. Sydney Bednarski set a new 9-10 girls record in the 100 meter Butterfly, while Daniel Mestemaker set a new boys 9-10 record in the 100 meter Breaststroke.
The 11-12 age group was well represented by Nathaniel Graham, who set new team records in the 50 and 200 meter Backstrokes, while Kassandra Mestemaker set a new team record in the 13-14 girls 200 meter Breaststroke.
Nor were fast times the only story of the day at the pool. Many of the team’s youngest swimmers were competing for the first time on January 30th. Older, more experienced Sharks, knowing how confusing a meet can be, volunteered to help the newest swimmers on the team. Each of the swimmers from the Bronze training group acted as a “buddy” for the novice swimmers, helping them get to the starting blocks on time, cheering for them during races, and helping them find their coaches and parents after their races. Bronze swimmers Avery Bednarski, Vivian Carney, Carolyn Mestemaker, and Sam Wagner went above and beyond what was expected of them in helping their novice swimmers, including getting in for warm ups with their swimmers, helping their swimmers step up onto the blocks, and even helping their novice buddies out of the water after races.
So, what’s next for the Sharks? Based on the meet results through January, the Sharks are on track to send their highest number of competitors ever to the SEOWV YMCA Championship meet on March 6 and 7 in Athens, Ohio. Could they win it all?
Sharks make Waves in Worthington at the Kelly German Meet 1/22-1/24/10
The Licking County Family YMCA Swim Team Sharks competed in the Kelly German Memorial Invitational in Worthington on January 22-24, 2010. Although they had one of the smaller contingents competing at the USA Swimming sanctioned meet, the Sharks made up for it with quality swims all weekend.
Leading the charge were record-setting individual performances by Sydney King, Daniel Mestemaker, and Jack McGonagle. King set a new team record in the 100 yard Backstroke for 13-14 girls, and easily won the 200 yard Backstroke as well. Mestemaker set a new 9-10 boys record in the 100 yard Breaststroke, and McGonagle set a 9-10 boys record in the 100 yard Backstroke. The relay team of Sydney King, Keely Lovern, Kassandra Mestemaker, and Alex Untied also set a new team record in the 13-14 girls 400 yard Freestyle Relay.
Other Sharks swimmers were also at the top of their games, posting best times and qualifying for YMCA Zone and National Championship meets while competing at Worthington. BreaststrokerShelbySeas earned a spot at the YMCA Zone Championship meet in the 11-12 girls 50 yard Breaststroke, while teammate Alex Untied qualified for the YMCA National Championship Meet in the 100 yard Breaststroke, finishing second to teammate Kassandra Mestemaker in the same event.
Nor were Mestemaker and Untied the only Sharks to finish 1-2. Paige Griesse and Maggie McGonagle went head to head in the 11-12 girls 50 yard Backstroke, with Griesse just touching out her teammate.
The next big meet for the Sharks in the SEOWV YMCA Championship, held March 6-7, 2010 in Athens, Ohio. Head Coach Teresa Fightmaster says that, based on the performances she’s seen so far this season, the Sharks could be in a position to win.
Shark Pack Attacks at Columbus North Sprints Invitational 1/16/2010
Although there were only fifteen 11 and over swimmers competing for the Licking County Family YMCA Sharks Swim Team at the Columbus North YMCA Sprints Invitational held on Saturday January 16, they made up for their lack of numbers with great quality swims.
Leading the Shark attack were Nathaniel Graham, Josie Bunstine, Brooke Kauchak, and Philip Hall. Graham, competing in the 11-12 boys age group, qualified for the YMCA State Championship meet in all three of his events, and narrowly missed qualifying for the YMCA Zone Championship meet in the 50 yard backstroke. Bunstine, competing in the 11-12 girls age group, also qualified for the YMCA State Championship meet in three events. Kauchak, also competing in the 11-12 girls age group, qualified for the YMCA State Championship meet in two events, as did Philip Hall, who competed in the 11-12 boys age group.
Vivian Carney also qualified for the YMCA State Championship meet in the 13-14 girls age group, and teammate Rachel Baughn continued her progress toward qualifying times. Other Sharks swimmers closing the gap on the YMCA State Championship time standards included Avery Bednarski, Samantha Evans, Emily Fouts, Dillion Greiwe, Emily Kauchak, Natalie Price, and Allie Rose..
The Sharks swimmers have several more chances to make their qualifying times between now and the YMCA State Championship meet on March 6 and 7. Given their progress to date, their coaches expect that many more Sharks swimmers will be eligible to compete for the team at the championship meet in one or more events. "Shark infested water" may take on a whole new meaning in Athens, Ohio this spring during the Y Championship meet.
JB Chambers Senior Meet 1/10/2010
The Licking County Family YMCA Sharks swimmers were back in action January 10, 2010, competing in the JB Chambers Senior Invitational. Although the Sharks swimmers were coming off of some of the hardest training of the winter season, they still achieved new qualifying times and personal best times in most of their events.
This meet was a little different than most YMCA meets, including only those events that are not typically swum in YMCA meets for 13 & over swimmers ... the line-up included 50's of stroke to allow swimmers to improve their relay qualifying times, 200's of stroke, 400 IM, 1000 and 1650 Free (that's a MILE, by the way!), and 400 Medley and Freestyle Relays.
Many swimmers used this opportunity to swim events they would not typically swim ... breast strokers were swimming back stroke; back strokers were swimming breast stroke; sprinters were swimming distance events, and distance swimmers were sprinting! Many swam an event for the first time in their swimming career, and proved that the Sharks can do it all! We saw 3 second time drops in 50's and full minute drops in mile swims. EVERY swimmer should be proud of their accomplishments at this meet.
The following swimmers qualified for the YMCA Zone Championship meet, held March 19-21, 2010 at Bowling Green, Ohio: Sydney King, Keely Lovern, Kassandra Mestemaker, and Alex Untied.
Additional swimmers qualified for the YMCA State Championship meet, held March 6-7. 2010 at Athens, Ohio: Kayla Fenimore, Danni Roberts, Jarod Rose, Grant Stahl, and Wyatt Wortkoetter.
Many other swimmers on the Sharks squad were close to qualifying times, and the Sharks coaches are confident that they will continue to improve through the remainder of the season and meet the time standards for the final meets of the season.
Penguin Plunge 1/2/2010
The Morning
Grant Stahl started the day off with a huge bang, with swimming the 200Fly. Grant dropped 4seconds and earning his AA time as well as a new Sharks Record! As the meet went on and the relays began things became interesting for the Sharks. First due to a few swimmers missing Grant had to get out of the water for his 200Fly and 1 heat later was swimming a 100Fr for a relay. The next relay was DQ’ed but we had a swimmer that has never swam the 100Fr before and stepped right up and into the relay! In the same relay due to an injury Josie Bunstine was not able to swim freestyle but swam Butterfly! If this was the 100Fly she would have made her AA time! However Alexis Hercenberg did swim the 100Fly earning her AA time! To wrap up the morning the following swimmers went 3 for 3 swims on the day: Grant Stahl, Josie Bunstine, Kayla Hill, Clayton Childers and Natalie Price! Good Job Swimmers!
The Afternoon
To start off the afternoon the relays did very well. But as the meet went on the Sharks swam better and better. The following swimmers went 3 for 3 swims for the day: Katie Darby, Bradley Bank, Sarah Dieterich, Sara Mills, Robert Worrell, Alex Fenimore, Abby Jarvis, Madelyn Gundler, and Ian Jarvis. The Sharks also had 3 Swimmers achieve AA Times. Rowan Moore in the 50Bk, Bryson Hauenstein in the 25Bk, and Ian Jarvis in the 25Fr. Ian Jarvis also made his Star Time in his 25Br! Great Meet Swimmers!
Shark Attack at MYST 12/19/09
The LCFY Sharks swam against the Mount Vernon (Ohio) YMCA Swim Team on Saturday, December 19, 2009. While some swimmers might have experienced a let down during the last meet before the winter holidays, the Sharks kept their focus and swam faster than ever.
Leading the Shark pack were Gabrielle Brust and Nathaniel Graham, who established new team records in their individual events. Brust, in her second year with the Sharks, set a new record for the 8 and under girls 100 freestyle, and went on to have time drops in the rest of her individual events. Graham, rejoining the team after taking a year off, established an 11-12 boys record in the 200 backstroke, and narrowly missed the team record and a YMCA Zone qualifying time in the 100 backstroke.
Brust and Graham were not the only swimmers with time drops. Each LCFY swimmer competing at the meet had at least one personal best time, most had best times in two or more events, and most also achieved qualifying times for the YMCA state championship meet to be held in Athens, Ohio during the weekend of March 5-7, 2010.
The Sharks swimmers are looking forward to two weeks of intense training over the winter break in preparation for the final part of the season. Their next home meet is January 30, 2010 against Hilliard YMCA, to be held at the Licking County Family YMCA, Newark, Ohio.
Our 23 LCFY Shark swimmers had an awesome meet competing among 1400 swimmers at the Makos Holiday Spirit Invitational. We achieved some incredible things such as:
·70 personal best swims
·7 individual team records were broken: (Timmy Spichiger: 100 Ba) (Sydney King: 200, 500, 1000 Fr, 50, 100, 200 Ba)
·1 relay team record was broken (13-14 girl’s 200 Fr relay of Alex Untied, Sydney King, Keely Lovern, India Sherman)
·2 individual events won (Sydney King: 200 & 500 Fr)
·1 relay event was won: (13-14 girl’s 200 Fr relay of Alex Untied, Sydney King, Keely Lovern, India Sherman)
The Sharks were in action for the first meet of the holiday season on December 5th. Although no points were scored, each Shark swimmer proved him or herself a winner by competing in the food for the hungry contest and other events in the intrasquad meet.
Just shy of 70 swimmers participated in the meet and donated 117 non-perishable food items to be given to local food pantries. Each participating swimmer also competed in individual and relay events, including a holiday costume relay. EVERY swimmer received a participation medal, and word on the street is that some have not yet taken them off!
Many swimmers swam best times. Perhaps the most amazing time drop was Nathaniel Graham's 50 fly, in which he cut almost 20 seconds off his entry time. Other swimmers showed similar, though not quite so dramatic, time drops. Further, three 10 and under swimmers, Alex Fenimore, Owen Keith, and Maddie Cartnal, competed in the 400 free for the first time (Alex and Maddie are actually only 7, and both established the initial LCFY Sharks record in this event for the 8 & under age group!!!).
It was great to see several Pre-swim team members take advantage of the opportunity to swim a meet ... they were awesome! Workers in the bullpen were also very happy to see the faces of swimmers on our team who were competing in their very first meet.
Even swimmers who were not competing participated in the meet, helping out at such diverse tasks as bullpen, timing, running, and concessions - proving once again that the Sharks are not only fast swimmers but also generous with their time and talents. Lancaster Invitational 11/7-11/8
Great Job to all swimmers at The LYST swim invitational. Saturday was a very interesting day. We started off with 5 of our swimmers in the 500fr; Jarod Rose, Vivian Carney; Allison Schroeder (who won 1st in the 13-14 girls), Cody Byrd and, Seth Stahl. Great swims to all you guys!
So the rest of the day was pure craziness due to the fact we had swimmers out sick. We ended up scratching 3 relays, which is never a good start to a meet; nevertheless the Sharks swam hard and competed to the very end. Congratulations to Kelsey Haller who not only had two 1st place finishes and two 2nd place finishes but also set a meet record! I want to thank Kelsey for setting the pace of the meet! Congratulations! Philip Hall also broke the 200 record Back stroke for 11-12 boys! Congratulations!
So Saturday ended and to be honest I was very worried that we would be missing a lot of our little swimmers on Sunday; just like we were missing our older ones on Saturday. Luckily we were only missing three! One of which showed up to swim all excited then right before warm-ups told her mom she was not feeling well and ended up going home sick. But Madelyn Gundler is back at practice and we are excited to see her and all our other swimmers at our next meet! Our little swimmers were amazing on Sunday! We saw time drops up to 10 seconds. We even saw Kasey Miller drop time in every event she swam not by half a second but by 2-3 seconds every time. Great meet Kasey! We may not have seen a first place finish on Sunday but we had 32 finishes that were 10th place or better half of which were 5th place or higher!
Great meet to everyone!
Coach Kalani

10/10/09 Midnight Madness Recap A good time was had by all at the Midnight Madness Relays at the Hilliard YMCA. The Sharks came away with one heat winning relay in the
According to Coach Keith and Coach Kalani, everyone swam very well at this Madness Invitational! Even Coach Kalani had an opportunity to practice what she teaches to the swimmers. They were disappointed when her relay did not win, because Keith had promised he would swim practice with them if they did!
The night was highlighted by Ali Evans swimming for the first time in competition. Ali is on the pre- swim team and was slated to move up. We needed an extra swimmer and she was available. Not knowing how to dive, she quickly learned with enthusiastic help from her sister Sami, among other swimmers. In her race, she even did a flip turn. No one was aware she knew how to do a flip turn, including Ali. Nice job Ali and congrats on your first meet.
Way to go Swimmers!
10/3/09 LCFY Sharks vs LTPY
On October 3, 2009 the LCFY Sharks accomplished something no other Sharks team has done--the Sharks defeated Liberty Powell in a dual meet!
How did the Sharks do it? The Sharks had kids who swam out of their minds, inspired by the actions of our swimmers of the meet, including Cheyenna Hansen (Bull Sharks), Kaitlyn Chapman (Hammerhead), Chad Bell (Tiger Sharks), Brooke Kauchak (Great White I), Jack McGonagle (Great White 2), Amelia Sigman (Bronze), Cody Byrd (Silver), and Alex Untied (Gold).
Most of the Sharks relays and nearly all of the swimmers swam faster than their entry times. Many of the swimmers also were swimming at least one event for the first time--and rocked! The Sharks were also fortunate to have three extremely inspiring swims--Livia Barnett in the 50 Back, Cheyenna Hansen in the 50 Free, and Abby McGonagle in the 400 Free.
The 50 Back can be a long event for an 8 and under. So, imagine swimming it for the first time against a 10 year old. That’s exactly the situation Livia Barnett faced. Despite being much smaller and younger than her opponent, Livia jumped into the pool, swam her race--and won.
For those who do not know her, Cheyenna is new to the team this year. She’s been working hard in practice to learn all the skills she needs to become a better swimmer, but this was her first meet with the Sharks and she was very nervous about swimming the 50 Free. Her coaches and teammates knew how nervous she was and lined the sides of the pool to cheer her on. The cheers of her teammates, parents, and spectators were deafening when she finished her event. Her coaches will never forget her smile as she finished and heard the cheering.
Abby McGonagle has been swimming with the Sharks for six years, and her coaches always describe her as being one of their hardest workers. She was up against a very strong swimmer from Liberty Powell in the 400 Free. Abby and the LTPY swimmer were neck and neck for the first 200 meters, both swimming fast, and both refusing to give up. Abby held onto her stroke and turn technique despite being tired and pulled away during the last 200 meters of the race, winning by a large margin and dropping an incredible amount of time.
The Sharks have the rest of the season before them. They have swum incredibly fast with only three weeks of practice to date. We should ask ourselves: what will the Sharks do next?
